Picture

Our Mangatū/Whātātūtū/
Tātaka Valley community

Whātātūtū is located north of Te Karaka on the upper reaches of the Waipaoa River, close to its meeting with its tributaries, the Mangatū River and Waingaromia River. Whātātūtū is about 45 minutes from Tūranga-nui-a-Kiwa/ Gisborne.

Rāwiri Tamanui

Rāwiri Tamanui (c1793-1863) In the battle of Otuhawaiki against Whakatōhea in 1832 at Herehereuma (Areoma) Rāwiri Tamanui I distinguished himself there and became the ringa kaha (strong hand/rangatira) of Ngāriki Kaiputahi. Our heroic tipuna Rāwiri  Tamanui who found a way to scale up and down the steep slopes of Areoma/Herehereoma to retrieve water and bring it back to sustain the Ngariki Kaiputahi defenders under siege by Whakatōhea.  He tied some vines around his chest and went down the side of the rock and collected some water and he brought it back up to the warriors. They drank it and regained their strength, then they attacked Whakatōhea. After the battle only one Whakatōhea person was left. He was alive because he had to tell other people never to come back to this area again. Rawiri Tamanui died of old age. He is buried on the Tapuae o Te Rangi hill which overlooks the Mangatū district.
